Today, IBM introduced something truly amazing that I wanted to make you aware of. Emulex has been selected by IBM to be included on the motherboard (or LOM) to provide all the amazing features and functionality that you have seen and enjoyed from the Emulex Virtual Fabric Adapter II as standard on the newly announced IBM HS23 and select System x M4 servers!
Let me break down the important changes for you…on the HS23, you will find a brand new Emulex four port chip on the motherboard, two ports will be used for 10Gb Ethernet (10GbE) traffic and two ports will be used for 1Gb Ethernet (1GbE), perfect for management traffic. The 10GbE on the LOM has all the features and functionality that have made the Emulex VFA II THE NUMBER ONE market share leader in previous generations of IBM BladeCenter, including industry-leading performance of 10GbE NIC, and CNA functionality. This means that our customers can upgrade and enable FCoE or iSCSI (referred to by IBM as their Feature On Demand functionality) over the two 10GbE ports and can use the 10GbE ports can in virtual NIC (vNIC) mode, allowing us to carve out the 10Gb bandwidth into up to four vNICs per port.
With virtualisation being the largest driver for new server platforms, it has become more important than ever to add more I/O functionality in order to take advantage of the latest generation of processors, which is why the HS23 has been exactly designed to excel in this environment. In addition to the Emulex four port chip embedded on the HS23 motherboard, Emulex also has the ability to give customers who require the very best I/O performance an additional two ports of 10GbE via the VFA II for HS23 CFFh adapter. This means that if you design your system with the Emulex CFFh Virtual Fabric Adapter II card, it will be possible to have up to 14 vNICs per HS23 Blade.
Emulex is the ONLY I/O partner on the HS23 that is able to offer the customer two ports of 10GbE (as part of the four port LOM) two ports of 1GbE, AND the additional two ports of 10GbE via the CFFh adapter. If a non-Emulex CFFh adapter is used within the HS23, it will mean the two onboard 10GbE LOM ports will be DISABLED, consequently adding cost and losing valuable two onboard 10GbE ports.
Here is a chart that explains what is newly being offered by us in the new HS23 blades:
| Previous Generation HS22 | New Generation (Romley) HS23 |
| 2 x 1Gb Ethernet LOM Ports | 2 10Gb Ethernet Ports + 2 x 1Gb Ethernet LOM Ports |
| 10Gb Ethernet available by CFFh Only | 4 x 10Gb Ethernet available via Emulex 4 Port LOM + Emulex VFA II for HS23 CFFh adapter providing 4 x 10Gb Ethernet and 4 converged Ethernet ports |
| Single 10Gb Ethernet Device | Redundant 10Gb Ethernet Paths via LOM and CFFh |
| Up to 8 Virtual NIC paths | Up to 14 Virtual NIC Paths |
Making the HS23 an even sweeter value proposition, two native Fibre Channel ports can also be added via the CIOv slot with the Emulex LightPulse® 8Gb Fibre Channel card.
IBM and Emulex have worked together to deliver our customers something truly unique with HS23… Exceptional price and performance, in addition to technology like vNIC, FCoE and iSCSI available as a Feature On Demand and more functional 10GbE ports than any other I/O vendor can offer for HS23.
Stay tuned for my next blog laying out more on the Fibre Channel side of what we’re doing with IBM.
